about

From the sleeping depths of winter to the stirrings of new life, Imbolc celebrates this passage into spring. The life force awakens and there is an expectation of new growth. The bark of trees change colour as the sap rises, snowdrops cheerily appear, buds swell on bare tree branches and plants burst through the soil.

Imbolc represents the outer journey while reminding us to stay connected to our inner journey. This time of fertility, growth, renewal and rebirth is a time to set our seeds of intention for the coming year. A time to let go of the past and to make space internally and externally for new beginnings.

This soundscape was inspired by the breath of a person in deep slumber gradually awakening. It contains sonic representations of the cold to the warm, the sparse to the plentiful, the stillness to the friskiness and of contraction to expansion.

Commissioned by Core Music for the Great Northumberland Winter Festival and installed in Hexham Abbey (Feb 2020).
